When people think about dermatology, their mind usually goes to the skin, but hair and nails fall under the category, as well. Advanced Dermatology treats conditions that specifically target your hair and nails. We use advanced treatment methods in addition to the standard procedures that have worked for generations.
Dealing with hair and nail conditions
Like conditions that affect the skin, conditions that affect your hair and nails can be as embarrassing as they are unhealthy. Hair loss, ingrown toenails – these are things that can embarrass us and make us lack confidence, which can’t be said for other diseases out there. That is why Advanced Dermatology specializes in these treatments. We want you to feel good in more ways than one, so we formulate our practice on a holistic healthcare approach. Nail Disease
Nail disease refers to multiple conditions affecting nails and the skin surrounding them. Symptoms of nail disease include sudden changes in growth rate, discoloration, thinning or thickening, pain, bleeding, discharge, and swelling. Our physicians trained in comprehensive treatments that minimize the occurrence of these complications and remove the condition completely. It should be noted, however, that nail disease could be a symptom of a more serious condition like anemia, lung disease, heart disease, or diabetes. If your dermatologist determines that you need extra treatment from a medical specialist, we’ll work with you to find the best option.
Fungal Infection
Fungal infections, especially in the toenails, are extremely common skin conditions. Toenails can get infected in damp public places in which people walk around barefoot, such as a public swimming pool or a locker room. This is different from athlete’s foot, which affects the skin in between your toes and not the nails. Symptoms of a fungal infection include discoloring and thickening of the affected nails. If left untreated, fungal infections can spread to other toenails and other parts of your foot, which leads to walking difficulties because infected toenails are difficult to trim and hurt when wearing shoes. Fungal infections in your fingernails are less common because they are exposed to air more often than your toes. It is possible, however, to spread a toenail infection to your fingernails if you do not wash your hands regularly.
Ingrown toenail
An ingrown toenail occurs when the side of a toenail grows into the soft tissue near the nail. It usually occurs with your big toe, although it can happen on any toe. To prevent ingrown toenails, avoid cramped shoes and any unnecessary strain on your feet, and make sure you clip your nails regularly. There is also a hereditary aspect to ingrown toenails, so ask around your family to see if anyone else deals with the condition. Symptoms of an ingrown toenail may include redness around the affected toenail, infection of the tissue surrounding the toenail, and swelling of the affected toe. Ingrown toenails that are left untreated may spread the infection to the surrounding bone, so do not hesitate to receive treatment.
Hair Loss
A full and healthy head of hair is a sign of vitality and youth. Unfortunately, many individuals suffer from hair loss, and the experience can be embarrassing for many. Our team is dedicated to offering the best minimally invasive options to patients seeking treatment for hair loss. They include LaserCap, which is an at-home treatment that contains 224 laser diodes that work to restore your hair, and Selphyl with PRP, which is a scientifically advanced procedure that addresses the cause of hair loss directly. However, like nail disease, hair loss can sometimes be a symptom of a much more serious condition. Advanced Dermatology can identify these issues early and help you formulate a broader treatment plan that involves other health specialists.
